Workshop on Development Strategies in Africa

(UNCTAD XII pre-conference event, off-site)
Organized by UNCTAD and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Foundation

Key Issues

Despite improvements in Africa's economic performance in the past few years, this has not had significant impact on job creation and poverty reduction. Besides, there are concerns about the sustainability of the current growth momentum in the medium to long term.

On the occasion of UNCTAD XII, whose theme is addressing the opportunities and challenges of globalization for development, it seems appropriate for African economists to reflect on the economic development experience on the continent and, more importantly, on the future orientation of African development strategies.

Purpose of the event:

  • Brainstorm on lessons from past development experience - what went right and wrong during the different periods.
  • Future orientation of the continent's development strategy: What are the elements of a new African development strategy, particularly in relation to faster and sustainable growth, poverty reduction and job creation?
  • What are the national and international policy mechanisms through which the elements of a new strategy could be realized (e.g. NEPAD, role of UNCTAD)?

Intended participants/target audience:

Renowned African economists, non-governmental organizations, donors and development practitioners.

Expected outcome/deliverables:

Background note and proposals for the future orientation of African development strategies in the light of Africa's development challenges.
